What is a sound meter?
A sound meter is a device that measures the level of ambient noise in a given area. The term "ambient noise" refers to all kinds of background noise, including human voices and traffic sounds. A sound meter can be used by anyone who needs to measure sound levels in the field, such as:
Acousticians - These professionals are responsible for designing and building new buildings and homes, as well as remodeling existing structures. They use sound meters to ensure that their work meets local building codes.
Consultants - Consultants often work with acousticians on projects that involve construction or remodeling. They may use a sound meter to help determine where noise problems are occurring and how best to fix them before they go public with their plans.
Homeowners & Tenants - Homeowners who want to protect their property from loud neighbors may use a portable indoor/outdoor sound level meter to determine if their neighbor's music or TV volume is too loud. Tenants can use this same device in order to measure the volume of parties being held by other tenants in adjacent apartments (if there's no lease prohibiting such behavior).
Popular Desktop Sound Meter Software Apps -
The best sound meters for PC are:
1.The OS X version of PPMeter is free and has a great user interface. It can also be installed on Linux.
2.Waveform is also free, but it's not as good as PPMeter because it displays the sound levels in a less accessible way (waveforms).
3.Sound Level Meter is $14 and offers a wide range of features, but its user interface isn't very good and the readings aren't very accurate either.
